Reflexology Recearch
Researchers from Imperial College London recently made a discovery about the role of hair follicles in our ability to sense touch. Previously it was believed only the nerve endings were responsible for transmitting sensation of touch. The researchers measured the release of 5-HTP (serotonin building block) and histamine by the cells in hair follicles in response to light touch. Skin cells release noradrenaline in response to tactile stimulus. Therefore in a reflexology treatment it is important to stimulate the top of the foot, as well as the sole. Both release different hormone signals to the brain. It is also important to use light touch as well as firm pressure. I have spoken about this before and also this is the way I was trained. It’s amazing to see research now backing up ancient Chinese medicine.
