Brain Scan Research Confirms Reflexology Affects Multiple Areas of the Brain

The below is the latest press release from the team behind the research which I have written about before, “Neural Pathways of Applied Reflexology”.

The inspiration behind this was a Dr. Stefan Posse, physicist and neuroscientist, who became interested in Reflexology after becoming a client of Reflexology Researcher, Kevin Kunz and whom, intrigued by the results, wanted to further understand the impact of Reflexology on the brain. Dr. Stephan Posse is also a researcher at the University of New Mexico, and presented groundbreaking functional MRI (fMRI) findings on the “Neural Pathways of Applied Reflexology” at the International Society for Medical Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) Annual Meeting  in Cape Town on May 12, 2026.

The research maps brain activity during foot reflexology to understand what happens in the brain in real time while reflexology was being applied and neurological impact in patients with stroke. Advanced MRI technology was used.

What They Found in Healthy People

Scans revealed distinctly different activation patterns for different reflex areas. Importantly, the brain responses weren’t limited to just the foot area of the brain — multiple regions were activated. One area that consistently responded was the supramarginal gyrus, a part of the brain packed with “mirror neurons,” which are linked to empathy, learning, and body awareness.

For the first time showed reflexology technique applied to different reflexology reflex areas activates different areas and networks of the brain in healthy controls and stroke patients

What They Found in Stroke Patients

In people who had suffered a stroke, the brain activation looked different — more one-sided — and varied depending on whether the left or right foot was worked. Following the application of reflex stimuli, patients demonstrated increased two-point discrimination and improved sensorimotor function in their hemiplegic hands.

Who Is Behind the Research

The team is led by Dr. Posse and includes well-known reflexology educators Barbara and Kevin Kunz, graduate student Arthur Schoen, and researchers from the University of Minnesota.

The team is now expanding the study to better understand the timing of brain responses during reflexology and to identify exactly which brain networks are involved in stroke recovery.

In short: this research is building scientific evidence that reflexology creates specific, measurable responses in the brain — and may play a meaningful role in stroke rehabilitation

New Reflexology Research to use Cortisol Testing

In an innovative approach to understanding the benefits of reflexology, researchers from the Association of Reflexologists (AoR) and University of Oxford are launching a new study that will use hair cortisol testing to examine how the popular-complementary therapy can reduce stress. Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears, and has long been hailed for its potential to alleviate stress and promote relaxation. However, until now, scientific studies have not delineated exactly how or why reflexology is able to reduce stress.

Now a team of researchers are aiming to change that by integrating cutting-edge hair cortisol testing to measure how reflexology may change long-term levels of the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol.

The study will involve participants undergoing regular reflexology sessions, with their hair cortisol levels being measured before and after a series of treatments. Cortisol is often referred to as the”stress hormone” because its levels rise in response to physical or emotional stress. Hair cortisol testing provides a unique advantage over traditional blood or saliva tests by allowing researchers to assess chronic stress levels over an extended period, offering a more comprehensive view of how stress is affecting the body.

Participants in the study will undergo 6 hour-long sessions of reflexology over a period of three months. As a member of the AoR I am really excited to see the results and report back.

Magnesium Benefits

Magnesium

Now there are many types of magnesium, they all help with different things

Sleep

Constipation

Bone Density

Muscle and nerve relaxation

This is because magnesium is involved in hundreds of cellular reactions in the body.

So, I can only say to do your research, as to what your issue is and find the right type of magnesium and especially the right dosage. For example, there is a lot of research to say (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352364621000079) post or menopausal women would benefit from increased levels of magnesium per day, instead of the usual adult RDA. This is all to do with bone density loss during menopause, and the bones store our magnesium. Bone density loss can also affect men too. I personally take the magnesium featured to help with sleep. I take two at night and have a little bit of magnesium in my multi vitamin in the morning. For sleep it is good to take at night, and this would also apply if you are taking it for restless leg syndrome.

Angelic Reiki and The Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Anahata is the Sanskrit word for the heart (fourth) chakra. It is associated with the colour green and is represented by a 12 petal lotus flower. It is located over the spine, near to the heart. The heart chakra is an energy centre, maybe associated with the electrical energy produced by the heartbeat. During a Reiki treatment the practitioner places hands over the seven main chakras, to bring about balance of each of the chakra. There are many ways of balancing chakras, associated with wellbeing activities e.g. meditation, talking and singing, creative pursuits, rest and movement. Originally, each chakra was a focal point for meditation, but further each chakra was developed to be associated with a different themes including the stage of life, emotions, psychology, angels, elements and mantras (to name a few). Anahata (Heart) means “unhurt or un-struck” and refers to the “cosmic sound” made by two objects or opposing forces meeting without contact. In this way we can see the heart as a centre of peace, where opposing forces can co-exist and create without confrontation. The heart chakra is associated with feelings of deep peace, serentiy and calmness. The archangel associated with the heart chakra is Raphael and I have called on Raphael to guide me in Reiki sessions for some time.

Reflexology and ‘Detox’

Your body is amazing and is detoxing 365 days a year, completely on its own, through the organs of elimination such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, intestines, lungs and skin. Waste and metabolic by-products of being alive are removed from our body without us needing to think about it, but it is so much better to have an efficient eliminatory processes than have these waste products staying in the body for too long. So how does Reflexology help to remove toxins, as is so often claimed?
For people that are in a sympathetic nervous state (stressed) most of the time, these eliminatory systems slow down and become sluggish. (fight/flight turns off digestive and urinary outputs dramatically). Our nervous systems have barely altered since we were hunter gatherers and therefore we tend to live in this modern world in a very stressed state, by being so far removed from our natural origins and way of living. That’s without even considering acutely stressful situations we all deal with from time to time, as well as chronic low level stress that may be present.
When our body is in a parasympathetic nervous state, elimination is improved (rest/digest) because we have more activity in digestive and urinary systems.
Reflexology = Relaxation = Parasympathetic state = better elimination of ‘waste products’.
Another way reflexology may help is through the founding belief in the reflexology – that each ‘reflex area’ on the foot is a system of nerve endings that correspond to an organ, gland or other part of the body (in the eliminatory system, for example). Reflexology studies (using Functional MRI technology) have shown that when a reflex area is worked, there is increased blood flow in the region of the brain related to the body part the reflex corresponds to.
Reflexology also boosts systems of circulation and can enhance circulation throughout the body. This circulation of course can be described in other ways going back to the very oldest roots of reflexology, being in Chinese medicine, those of “Qi’ and the good flow of life force energy in the whole body.
There are many ways to describe and try to define how it works, an endlessly fascinating topic.

Zone Face Lift and Rosacea

I have updated my treatment contraindications after much experience with Rosacea. Zone Face Lift is a vigorous and stimulating sculptural massage and may not be suitable for those with rosacea, but if the rosacea is mild then adaptions can be made to ZFL such as using amethyst rollers instead of Gua Sha and avoiding the stimulating massage on affected areas, usually cheeks.  Facial reflexology or a classic facial may be more suitable.
